Additional Workforce Development

 

Again, this internship will be 14 weeks in total and will involve client-based services. At times, the intern’s availability will exceed business needs. As a result, this excess time will set up the interns for not only occupational skills but also life skills.

 

The Council defines “financial literacy” as “the ability to use knowledge and skills to manage financial resources effectively for a lifetime of financial well- being” and defines “financial education” as “the process by which people improve their understanding of financial products, services and concepts, so they are empowered to make informed choices, avoid pitfalls, know where to go for help and take other actions to improve their present and long-term financial well- being.” [2]

 

By achieving financial literacy, whether interns are educated by professionals within the community or guest speakers from around the city, the knowledge gained will be invaluable for the young men and women involved in the program. The interns have an opportunity to take something abstract such as financial literacy and education and turn it into something tangible. They can achieve this life long skill by being compensated for this position so they can put these necessary skills into practice.

 

Moreover, having a resume is one of the most important pieces when applying for a job. Spending excess time in the rotation on creating and critiquing a resume is another important aspect for this internship.
The end goal for this internship program is to have interns increase their marketability to future employers and obtain future careers rather than entry-level jobs. The interns can utilize the excellent resources made available through Pitt Business, which will help the interns build a reputable resume. By creating a resume, the interns will have a sense of confidence and accomplishment when discussing this program with future employers.

 

Throughout the rotations, demonstrating the characteristics of an ethical and professional leader should be a main focus. The chosen applicants will have an opportunity to better themselves and positively impact their community. The workforce development will allow for leadership characteristics to be impressed upon each of the interns that will follow them for the rest of their careers.
